P100 Erp As A Tool To Identifying Problem Solving
One issue that has gained relevancy in recent times is the problem solving abilities of higher education students. These abilities have been found to be important for students’ academic progress, especially in areas such as Mathematics. Specifically, logical problem solving abilities are known to be an important factor in student’s success, in all education levels. It is, therefore, important that we are able to monitor this capacity, so as to understand students’ faults and try to erase them. This study aims to investigate diferences in logical problem solving abilities in first year higher education students of diferent specialization areas (Informatics Engineering, and Communication and Multimedia Design). These abilities were measured via results in the Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices test. Diferences in cerebral activity during problem resolution were also analysed, in conjunction with students’ historical academic data. The obtained performance results indicate a slight tendency for more correct answers from the Informatics Engineering sample, which can be an indicator of better problem solving abilities from these students. Regarding participants’ cerebral activity, statistically significant diferences were found, mostly related to attention. The results can be evidence of difering strategies used by the two student samples.
