Intelligent Transport Systems In The 5g Era

New mobile technologies, such as 5G, are challenging the existing communications paradigms by addressing the shortcomings of currently functional 4G networks, such as latency, network slicing, data rate, speed, coverage, bandwidth, technical characteristics in which 5G technology is clearly superior to previous technologies. Therefore, such technologies enable intelligent transport systems to become fully integrated for multi-modal logistics by allowing massive simultaneous connections and ubiquity of networks, even under high mobility situations or massively populated zones. In this perspective, 5G will perform a key role as an enabler for real IoT and its corresponding Internet of Vehicles. In a comprehensive manner, this work aims to address how 5G technology will influence intelligent transportation systems, including autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles and vehicular communications. In addition, through this paper, we review the SOLID-5G project in which the team is involved. Moreover, the paper depicts the project VITAL-5G and its architecture, with a use case dedicated to port-to-ship communication based on an IoT 5G network.
