Sports Streaming: Transition From Tv To Digital. An Analysis of Traditional and New Media Companies In The Online Environment

Currently, the growth of esports influences the development of sports streaming platforms and their high popularity. The objective of this study is to understand the development of sports consumption, considering streaming ser- vices and their progress in both the international and Portuguese markets. Spe- cifically, the Portuguese case is analyzed in some detail. We conducted a survey that had 172 answers from Portugal. 76.7% of the respondents said they like to watch sports, mainly soccer (51.5%). These values show the influence of sports consumption by Portuguese people. Most respondents are subscribers to a general streaming service, but only 7.6% are subscribed to a sports streaming service. The biggest drawback for respondents is the price of streaming services, as 35.2% use free channels. Most of the respondents enjoy watching esports and consider it to be comparable to traditional sports (80%). The consumption of sports has changed, but the survey reached no consensus regarding the possible replacement of TV by streaming services.
